How do you change a cv joint in a rover416i (1998)?

This is a fairly simple job to do:-

First identify which joint needs to be changed (Inner or Outer)

Jack up the car, remove the wheel, undo the big nut in the centre of the drive hub, remove the brake calliper, disconnect all the interconnecting tie rods and tracking control arms, remove the drive hub.

If the outer CV joint is to be removed you can try to remove it from the drive shaft with drive shaft still attached to the car. Normally the CV joint has a spring clip retaining the CV joint in place, use a soft hammer to strike the rear of the CV joint.

If its the inner CV joint you will need to pull the drive shaft out of the gear box, have a container there to catch the oil that will leak out.

Once the shaft is out you can strip the CV joint down and remove the CV from the shaft.

Re-fitting is the reverse of the above, remember to use the correct CV grease and use lots of it.
