If asking a mechanic to change both cv joints should the axle or shaft be changed by them. Or must tell dem to

If you ask a mechanic to change both joints and he takes the axle out of the car, disassembles it and installs two new joints on it there is something wrong with this person. If a mechanic diagnosis your car with having one worn out joint I would be suprised if he didn't recommend that you just replace the whole axle assembly. I would say that if you asked them to change both joints they would automatically replace the whole thing but you never know. You are usually money ahead to change the whole axle because of the difference in labor. It is more labor to change a joint as you have to remove the axle, remove the joint, replace the joint and re-install the axle. When you replace an axle assembly you just remove it and install the new one with 2 new joints on it. For example, if I was changing a right front axle on a 95 caravan it would take me about 30 minutes to change the axle and you would be back on the road. If I was to change just the outer joint, it would take about an hour providing the old joint came right off without any problems and the new one went back on in the same fashion. The difference in price, a reman axle is around $89.00 and the joint alone is probably about $40.00 or so. Basically you pay for the joints and get the axle shaft for free.
If asking a mechanic to change both cv joints should the axle or shaft be changed by them. Or must tell dem to
a mechanic should never do any repair without prior approval.
If asking a mechanic to change both cv joints should the axle or shaft be changed by them. Or must tell dem to
you should always get a price up front. if you told them to change the cv joints that is what you get.but you can get the whole axle for much less. the mechanic should tell you this when talking to them but may not.
definatly inquire if they can get you a remanufactured axle if not find a shop that will this will save you time and money good luck.
