Knocking noise coming from the front of my car? CV Joints? or Wheel Bearing, or something else?

This happened just after my service from my mechanic, but i was on the freeway and a knocking sound started to come from the fromt rhs of the car, it's a 1990 Honda CRX SIR, it's wierd because it only happens when the car is a it's normal operating temperature, after about 20mins of driving and when i reach speeds above 60km/h, i'm not sure if it's one of the cv joint boots, because when i lift the hood after i have driven i can smell rubber. Any answers would be much appreciated, it's really starting to worry me, it feels like something is going to fall off. i went to pedders suspension and i am changing the cv joint on thursday.

Heres a dumb response: Was it in the shop for a water pump? or hose or anything to do with the cooling system? If it was, there is air in the cooling system that has to be bled out, That will cause a popping noise every so often when it is hot..........

the rubber smell..... maybe something is rubbing, is the car lowered? that will cause noises and rubbing.......

I was a honda mechanic for 7 years, and i have come across this

i would check to see if the under guards are tightened up properly. the wheel arch under cover etc mechanic's take these off sometimes to properly service the car and rarely tighten them back up.
a cv joint will be noisy around corners at all speeds and a wheel bearing will usually make more of a whirring type noise.

if it happened after a service take it back there- maybe they left something loose
MORE THAN LIKELY ITS YOUR AXLE BEARINGS IF IT IS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ! THE REASON IT HAPPENS AFTER IT GETS WARM IS BECAUSE WHEN A BEARING STARTS TO FAIL IT EATS THE SEALS OUT AND YOU HAVE NO LUBRICATION IN THE BEARING, SO WHEN YOU DRIVE IT FOR A WHILE THE TEMPERATURE GETS UP AND THE HEAT CAUSES THE PROTECTIVE BOOT TO START TO MELT. THE WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS REPLACE THE AXLE ASSEMBLY THIS COMES COMPLETE WITH THE NEW BEARINGS PRESSED ON AND NEW SEALS AND NEW BOOTS.
